Yesterday, with no planned activities, I decided to hop the subway and wander around Reading Terminal Market; home of all things culinary. To be honest, I was a bit overwhelmed! I’ve been there before, but never on a Saturday afternoon!
I happened to find a delicious turkey sandwich at a local deli’s booth. After, I was looking for something sweet (of course), so I journeyed to the other side of the Market to check out some delectable looking Italian treats I thought I saw.
Lo and behold it was Termini Brothers Bakery. Their main shoppe is located in South Philadelphia somewhere around 9th and Dickinson…wander around, you’ll find it ;)
As I peered through there cases, oh no, it couldn’t be…
Amaretti Cookies are perhaps my favorite Italian cookie (biscotti don’t count, they’re more of a cracker if you ask me! ) I had my first bite of bliss when I was in Florence, IT at a booth in Mercato Centrale.
Their texture is (or should be) exactly like their main ingredient-almond paste: rich and chewy. The almond taste shines with an accent sweetness. While there are a lot of impostor products and recipes out there, there is only one, true Amaretti Cookie.
Now, I must say, Termini Brothers’ rendition was close…but it just didn’t have the same ‘wow’ factor.
The Amaretti Cookies I know are totally soft… no ‘crunch’.
If you can help me track down a recipe for Amaretti Cookies, I will be forever indebted to you. Or perhaps I’ll send you a batch? ;)
