Hello there. Long time no update, eh? I’m back with two great new restaurant reviews for you.
Saturday, L’s family came to town to celebrate his dad’s birthday… HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BILL!
L’s dad shares our love for contemporary American-esque fare so I thought this occasion would be a great one to try out the fairly new Kennett in the Queen Village neighborhood of Philadelphia. Kennett has received some great press in the past couple of weeks so I was very eager to see what the fuss was about.
Kennett’s building is wonderful; it first opened as a cafe in 1924.
The interior is very old world and classic. Perfection. Upon entrance, all you see is the bar…but then, the restaurant opens into a mid-sized dining room ending with the kitchen studded with a brick oven.
They have a fun cocktail menu. I selected Prohibition: Seagram’s Gin, Lillet, apricot brandy, orange juice, orange bitters. It was strong, quite citrus-y but I didn’t love it.
What I did love, was the pizza. Absolutely fabulous. We all shared a Margherita and devoured it. The sauce was very homemade.
For mains, we stuck to burgers of two varieties: Beef/Bone Marrow and Lamb. I chose the Lamb Burger (smoked paprika, cucumber yogurt slaw with capers, shaved onion, purple cabbage, and toasted cumin) and I thought it was incredible; the flavor combination was original and the slaw was a perfect accompaniment. L chose another pizza, this time with freshly cut salami and pepperoni. He loved it.
I thought the restaurant was great for burgers and pizzas with a bit of a gourmet flair. They also have a fabulous selection of starters that can be made vegan as well . Recommended.

Sunday, we decided to venture to West Philadelphia, right outside of the UNiversity of Pennsylvania campus, to Bobby (Flay)’s Burger Palace. A little change of pace, yeah? Looks like burgers were the weekend theme.
So let me just say, this place is adorable. A typical ‘burger joint’; you order at the counter, grab a number, and hang out until they bring your order to you. If only they wore roller skates!
I chose the Napa Burger; Fresh Goat Cheese / Watercress / Meyer Lemon Honey Mustard. I subbed a turkey burger for beef and got it “topless” over baby greens. My only complaint is the insane amount of salt on the salad. I love salt, don’t get me wrong, but there was an insane amount all over the salad. Next time, I’ll forgo getting it over greens and just remove the bun. Otherwise, the burger was awesome- lots of melted goat cheese and the meyer lemon mustard was great.
L chose the LA burger and let me tell you, I was jeaaaalous! It was covered with cheddar and avocado and at first bite, I was in love.
We shared an order of sweet potato fries and honestly, I felt like I was in heaven. The best sweet potato fries I’ve ever had!
We loved BBP! And will definitely be back

With very full bellies, we walked the 3 1/2 miles home through a very bustling, Springtime Philadelphia. A quick stop at opening day of Headhouse Farmer’s Market and home we went. A truly great weekend filled with wonderful food, weather, and most importantly, company. What more can you ask for?
