…and then some.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas and finding (or receiving!) that perfect gift for (or from) a person I love. However,I think it’s only right to respect the preferences of the person you’re buying for, of those who truly don’t need or want any physical gifts this holiday season, whether their preferences are rooted in minimalism, conscious consumerism, or what have you. What matters, what gift giving is about really, is bringing joy to the recipient and showing them that they’re loved by you. And you’ve exhausted the typical wine, chocolate or photo gift route.
For that person who has everything and then some, have you considered donating to a charity in their name? Your gift can not only bring joy to the person that receives it, but make even the slightest difference in this world.
There is certain etiquette involved, by that I mean don’t just pick a charity based on your interests, slap their name and the information on a card and call it a day. Give thought to the recipient and do the research. Some charities listed below even have “gift catalogs” where you can choose a specific value (from five dollars to thousands) that will contribute to the donation listed, providing you with a card that explains everything.
What do you think, would you do this? Yeah? Then here are a few ideas to get you started…
UNICEF You can choose “Inspired Gifts” such as Blankets (23.34) or School-in-a-box(213.34) and much more ranging from $6 to $1,000+
OXFAM America Help start a farmer’s market ($25) or train a midwife ($150)

Domestic (Mostly Philadelphia) Causes:

Oh, and Changing the Present provides a great search feature to find charities that interest you. This could be a great tradition in your own home each year during the holiday season…choosing a meaningful cause and donating your money or time.
I’d love to hear other causes you’ve heard of or have worked with in the past.
Have a wonderful weekend!
